Cute and Cheap DIY Fall Wood Signs!

Check out these DIY pumpkin fall wood signs with free svg file!! An easy and cheap way to create beautiful fall decor!

Hi Friends!!  Happy Fall!!  I am starting to decorate a bit for fall and wanted to share this DIY pumpkin wood sign with a free SVG file with you.

It really doesn’t have to cost much money to make cute fall signs when you hoard scrap wood (like I do!) and have an electronic cutting machine.

I having been trying to figure out Inkscape and finally was able to make this cute “Happy Pumpkin Spice Season” fall SVG file.  I wanted to share with you all for free along with this tutorial if you want to make some cute fall wood signs.

This is how it turned out!

How to Make a Wood Pumpkin

The first thing you want to do is download the file and upload it to Cricut Design Space.  Attach the file together and it will all turn the same color.  Make sure to check out my Cricut Design Space 101 series if you need additional help with the software.

Decide what size pumpkin you want (will depend on what size of wood you have).  Mine is about 12 inches.  I added the file in front to see how big I wanted to make it.

I cut out the pumpkin on scrap cardstock and the saying on vinyl with my Cricut Explore Air.  Then you’ll weed out the letters to use the vinyl as a stencil.

Place the large pumpkin cut on top of a piece of plywood and trace the outline.

Secure the wood with a clamp and cut out the pumpkin with a jigsaw. Then sand the wood with 220 grit sandpaper.

I then stained the pumpkin with dark walnut.  This is an extra step that you don’t have to do.  I wanted the stem to be brown and also wanted the edges to be dark when I sanded them.

Once that’s dry, paint the DIY wood pumpkin with what you want the color to be.  I wanted an off white pumpkin so I used this chalk paint.

Using Vinyl as a Stencil

Once the paint is dry you will add the vinyl stencil.  Apply transfer tape to the whole piece of vinyl.  Peel off the backing and center it on the pumpkin.

Scrape it down with a scraper.  Peel off the transfer tape.  The vinyl should stay on wood.

I apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the letters to help prevent bleeds.  (Again, an extra step!  But I think it helps!)

Let the Mod Podge dry for 30-60 minutes.

Now the fun part!!  Decide which colors you want and start painting. This is what my pumpkin sign looked like after I brushed on the paints.

I let the paint dry for 15-20 minutes and then peel off the vinyl.  Use a weeding tool or box cutter to get off the small pieces.

Sand the edges if desired to get a worn look.  You could also apply a top coat of poly or clear varnish.

Then sit back and admire your new cute DIY sign!!  Not bad, for a super cheap project, right?  Display wherever you want and enjoy!!
