Large DIY Scrabble Tiles the Easy Way!!

Create an amazing entryway or hallway with DIY Scrabble Tiles!  Making wall scrabble tiles is a quick and easy DIY home decor project.

One of the spots I have never really liked in my house is our entryway wall.  It’s always been kind of blah with just one big picture and a table under it.

Of course, to get inspiration, I scoured Pinterest and found a lot of great ideas.  I stumbled upon a picture of wall scrabble tile names and knew that it would be perfect for this spot.

So, I whipped some up and hope that maybe you’ll be inspired to make some yourself using my DIY scrabble tiles tutorial!

I know, I say almost everything is easy, but really, these DIY scrabble family names are pretty easy to make and does not require a lot of time.  I just love how they added character to our wall, some crooked letters and all!

Prepping Wall Scrabble Tiles

I bought 3, 1×4 pieces of cheap wood at Lowe’s.  I only ended up using 2.  I first cut 22 squares.  Remember 1x4s are actually 3.5 inches wide so I measured 3.5 inches, marked it off and cut them with my favorite miter saw (click here!)

I had drawn on a piece of paper how I wanted the scrabble name tiles to go so I knew exactly how many I needed.

So, here is where I messed up a bit on my scrabble wall art… Oops!  I do on almost every project, so I have come to accept that my projects will never be perfect.

I was thinking that scrabble tile font letters were white so I was wanting a dark background stain… well, they are not white, they are actually black!

I didn’t realize this until after I put on Colonial Stain and then Dark Walnut over that since the first stain wasn’t dark enough.  So, after they dried, I ended up putting a whitewash finish on top to lighten them up a bit.

Designing Big Scrabble Letters in CDS

NOTE:  I used my Cricut to make the scrabble name tiles, but if you don’t have a cutting machine you can also use print out the letters and use the pencil transfer method.  Check out my budget decor tutorial to see how easy it is to do!

For the stencils, I designed the letters in Cricut Design Space.  I googled “scrabble font” and downloaded it.  If you need additional help with CDS, make sure to check out my Cricut Design Space 101 series.

Once you install it you can use it in Design Space.  I put a 3.5×3.5 inch square in the back so I could size them to what I wanted.

I ended up sizing the letter and number into about a 3-inch box size.  I cut all the letters out on vinyl (some people use contact paper).

For this project, I’m using the vinyl for stencils so I needed to weed out the letters and numbers so I could paint in those spaces.

Add the vinyl to each square and try to center as best you can ( I didn’t do this very well on some of them!)  Press down the vinyl firmly so paint won’t bleed under.

I used a dabber and some acrylic black paint but you can use a paintbrush.  After I dabbed, I brushed it a bit to make the paint flat.  Once they are pretty dry you can peel off the vinyl.

Easy, right??  That’s all you need to do for the DIY scrabble tiles.

I use my Cricut to make the majority of DIY decor.  If you’d like to get more inspiration on what you can do with a Cricut, check out my Ultimate Resource of Cricut Ideas.

Hanging Wooden Scrabble Tiles on the Wall

Next, I laid them all out on my floor so I could see how to attach the wooden scrabble tiles together.  As far as hanging the scrabble tiles on the wall goes, I glued and stapled a thin board that I had leftover from my shiplap fireplace to the back of the names.

I still added a board to the single letters so they would be the same distance from the wall.

I added some sawtooth hangers on the back of the long ones and some wax on the single ones and attached the DIY scrabble tiles to the wall!  What do you think??

I’m not happy that the air conditioner control pad is on that wall but I just arranged the tiles around it and added some other wall art.  The metal light up words I bought at Michael’s when they were 80% off!

So, here is my entire entryway wall.  I love walking down the stairs and seeing it next to my new DIY farmhouse table in the adjoining dining room, it makes me smile!

One of the chests was my Grandpa’s and the mailbox was the one thing my youngest wanted from my grandparents’ house.  It all adds great charm to the home!

Here are the words lit up.  Pretty fun, right??  I especially love it now that I have refinished my banister to farmhouse theme so it all goes together so well!  Check out how easy it was to refinish an oak banister here!

  • Miter Saw

  3. Sand the wood if needed. Stain or paint your desired color. Let dry.
  4. Google "scrabble font" and download the one you like.
  5. Design the letters in your cutting software. I sized my letter and number to 3 inches.

  8. Paint the letters and numbers. Allow to dry for 20-30 minutes.
  9. Gently remove the vinyl. Let dry fully.
  10. Arrange the big scrabble name tiles how they will go on the floor and then turn them over. Apply a thin piece of wood across the longest name first with glue and a staple gun. Continue applying thin wood to hold all of the DIY scrabble tiles together.
  11. Add a sawtooth hanger or command strips to the back and hang up your new scrabble wall art!
