DIY Tree Topper from Dollar Tree Items!

Want an easy and cheap DIY tree topper?? Grab a Dollar Tree star and wrap some twine around it. You’ve got yourself a rustic Christmas tree topper!

Hi Friends!  How is your holiday season going so far??  Are you done with decorating or are you in full decorating mode right now?

I am mostly done…(sigh of relief!)… just trying to finish my new thrift store tree that I bought for $15!

Yep, you heard me correct, $15 for a 7-foot tree.  I’ve always wanted a second tree for our family room since that’s where we spend most of our time and I wanted this one to be all mine!!

My three kiddos get to do whatever they want with our main tree, but I wanted to decorate this one with a rustic theme to go with the rest of my house, without spending much money (you notice that theme running through my blog!  Ha!).

Since I have been busy making a ton of new DIY Christmas decor, I knew I could make a DIY tree topper so I started there.

DIY Tree Topper

I absolutely love my DIY Christmas tree topper!  It adds that perfect farmhouse/rustic feel and it only cost me $1!

That’s right. Super cheap and this is probably the easiest DIY project I have on my blog.

  • Large glittered star from the Dollar Tree
  • Jute twine – you could also find some at the Dollar Tree if you don’t have any already
  • Lights – these are the same lights I used on my tree.  I really wanted the sphere LED lights so I splurged and got 3 boxes for my tree.  But you could use any lights!  Dollar Tree even has a short strand!

How to Make a Christmas Tree Topper

Here is the gold sparkly star from the Dollar Tree.  I love me some glittery things, but this was a little too sparkly for me.

I really wanted a rustic Christmas tree topper so I just used the Dollar Tree star as a base.

All you have to do is wrap the entire thing in twine!  Start from one point and start wrapping.

You can wrap really tight together or loose, whatever suits your fancy!  Then start wrapping across the center from all the different edges.

I didn’t have any rhyme or reason to my wrapping, I just went for it!

Wrap another point and then do a few more pass-throughs over the center then do the next point and so on.  Mine looked like this when I was done.

Just tie the ends in a knot when you’re done.

Adding Lights to the DIY Christmas Tree Star

Now it’s time to make the Dollar Tree tree topper light up if you want. This is an optional step, you can always just attach the twine star tree topper without lights and it still looks gorgeous.

To add the lights, flip it over and just push some LED lights under the twine.  The LED lights don’t get hot!

This star was curved in so it had space for the lights.  I put one light at each corner and 3-4 in the center.

Then I used the rest of the lights to wrap around my tree.  I tied the star tree topper to the top of the tree with some more twine and it looks perfect on my flocked tree!

BTW…have you ever flocked a tree to make it look like it has snow on it??  It’s so easy and quick to do!  Click here to check out my tutorial on how to flock a tree!  (Psssttt… I even have a video tutorial for you!!)

I am looking for the svg files you used to make the Christmas wine glasses. Do you sell or give them out?

Hi Debbie, those are not my files. Tis the Season was from CDS. You should be able to Google the "believe" file and find it for free, same with Grinch. The other ones I think I got from FB groups a few years back. I do plan on making some holiday Svgs soon for some wine glasses. Any saying you are wanting specifically??
