How to Paint Plastic Easter Eggs Easily So They are Pretty Eggs!

Check out this tutorial on an easy and quick Easter egg makeover and learn how to paint plastic Easter Eggs so they are elegant and pretty!

Hi Friends!  I am still working on centerpieces for our Ladies Night Out at church so my house is covered in cute Easter decor.  I am in charge of making elegant and inexpensive Easter centerpieces.

For part of the centerpieces, I wanted to use these wire baskets I found at the dollar store but the plastic eggs were way too bright and cheap looking to go along with my rustic theme.

So, of course, I had to paint the plastic Easter eggs so that they were pretty Easter eggs.  Painting plastic Easter eggs was much easier than I thought and they even turned out better than I had imagined!

Since I had to do 12 baskets I didn’t want to have to hand paint every egg so I thought, “Can you spray paint plastic Easter eggs?” And luckily the answer is a huge YES!

This really is a super easy and fast Easter egg makeover!

This is how the eggs started out… we all know how cheap looking plastic eggs are…

… and this is how the plastic eggs turned out! I much prefer the pretty muted colors to the vibrant colors of the regular eggs.

How to Paint Plastic Easter Eggs

I’ve seen some people stick wooden skewers or pipe cleaners in the small hole on the eggs to hold them up while painting. Like I said before, I was making a lot of pretty eggs for Easter basket stuffers so I didn’t want to make this time-consuming or tedious.

So, I started out by opening all the eggs and laying them out on cardboard. If you are only painting a few plastic eggs, you could lay them on a paper plate.

Then I sprayed each section of the plastic eggs with a different color of the Rustoleum spray paint- one seaside, one strawflower, and one oregano.  Allow the eggs to dry.

So much better already, right?? I love this type of paint because you don’t need a primer spray paint!

How to Add Speckles to Painted Easter Eggs

To add speckles to the newly painted Easter eggs, I got a few different colors of chalk paint (pink, yellow, purple) and some acrylic craft paints (brown) – it’s just what I had on hand. You don’t need any kind of special chalk paint, they all work pretty much the same.

I put them all on a plate and used a toothbrush to flick the paint on.  It’s messy but kind of fun!

Just dip the toothbrush in a color and with your fingers flick the bristles of the toothbrush over the egg top and bottoms.  I just did random little bits of color all over.

If you want more of a polka dot look, use a qtip or dauber to dab on polka dots.

Then on some of the already painted Easter eggs, I sprayed the Rusteoleum hammered spray on and a cool crackled look happened.  I loved it!

That’s really all there is to it to make pretty Easter eggs! Such a simple Easter craft!

You can add as many speckles as you want and in whatever color combinations and if you want to go one step further you can cut out some fun sayings with a Cricut in vinyl and them to the eggs!

Once the painted plastic eggs are dry you can snap them back together and use them anywhere for decoration or for egg hunts!

My painted eggs were put in a newly painted easter basket and set (click here for Easter egg basket makeover tutorial!) on top of a picture frame where the glass is covered with brown dollar tree wrapping paper as part of some spring decor.

I also added these easy and cute DIY hand painted Easter wood signs that I made.

On another table, I placed my wooden cross decoration that I made out of upcycled materials.

The night turned out beautiful and we were able to use the decorations again at our Easter Sunday service. Spray painting is seriously one of my favorite ways to make anything look pretty!

If you make some, let me know where you used them!
