Decoupage Glass with Napkins for Easy Decor!!

Learn how to easily decoupage glass with napkins to create cheap candle holders or vases.  Decoupaging with napkins on a Dollar Store vase is an easy DIY project that doesn’t require any special tools.

Fall is finally almost here!!  Yay, I’m so excited!  We are still waiting for our weather to cool down here, but I love seeing the pumpkins in the stores and the pumpkin spice everything.

I am updating my Fall decor this year, so I wanted to show you a super-easy way to make an inexpensive Autumn decoration by using a decoupage glass technique to make a votive or vase.

I headed to my local Dollar Tree to get the supplies needed for this easy project and I love how my decoupage vase turned out!

First thing you’ll want to do is wash your glass vase.

Preparing Decoupage Napkins

When you use napkins for decoupaging, you only want the top ply.  I find the easiest way to pull them apart is to rub my index finger on a glue stick and then rub some on my thumb.

Then put a corner of your napkin in between the two glued fingers and pull your fingers apart.  The napkin will pull apart with your fingers!

Take the layers completely apart.  Some napkins will have 2 or 3 plys.  You only want the top layer of the napkin with the pretty designs.

Then you are going to start applying Mod Podge all over the glass item.  I like to work in about 2-3 inch sections.  I ended up using a PVC pipe with a noodle on it to hold the glass jar (it’s part of my DIY tumbler turner!)

I apply a smooth layer of mod podge with a flat paintbrush and then lay the napkin on straight.

I then put my hand in a ziplock and gently smooth out the napkin.  If you have a really thin napkin you might be able to get it totally smooth but I actually like the texture of a few creases.

Then apply more mod podge to the next section and lay the napkin over it and smooth it down.

Keep working in sections all the way around.  When you get to where the decoupaged napkin edges meet, cut off the extra napkin.

Try not to get too much overlap.  Make sure you have mod podge underneath the flap and press down.  If you have extra napkin at the top, just cut it off and apply some mod podge over it to secure it down.

Sealing Decoupage Vase Glass Decor

I let my Mod Podge on the napkins dry completely overnight.

To seal the mod podge decoupage vase, apply one more layer of even mod podge all over the decoupage glass.

I stood it on a lid so that it wouldn’t stick to my table while it was drying.

Once it’s dry, it’s all set to use!!

You can place a candle in it or use it as a vase.  I put a battery charged candle (like these ones) in mine.  It looks pretty when it’s daylight or lit up at night!
