How to Make Easy Grinch Decorations with Dollar Store Supplies!

Make easy and cute glitter Grinch decorations DIY with a few supplies from the dollar store.

“He’s a mean one… Mr. Grinch…”  I loved watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas when I was a kid.  Year after year, I would scour the TV guide to find out when it was on and then I’d wait by the big box for it to start. 

You only got to watch it once.  There were no DVRs nor Netflix back then. 

The thirty minutes that it played on a grainy screen was truly a magical night for me.  I know some of you can relate, right??

With the release of the newest The Grinch movie,  I was inspired to make something new to add to my Grinch decorations.

I really can’t get enough of these cute Grinch decorations.  They are super easy to make.  I have a Free hand-drawn SVG File and a video tutorial for you, so let’s get started!

Materials Needed for Grinch Decorations

• glass bowls – I used one large floral glass bowl and one small one from Dollar Tree
• glitter
• Mod Podge
• paint brush
• rubbing alcohol
• feather boa from Dollar Tree or craft store
• Santa hat – I got a headband at the 99 Cent Store and cut off the hat
• hot glue gun and glue sticks
• fairy lights (optional)
• Cricut cutting machine– always check prices between Cricut.com and Amazon (click links to compare!)
• black and yellow adhesive vinyl
• transfer tape
• FREE SVG cut file – see below

Tips on How to Make Glitter Grinch Decorations

I made this exactly the same way as one of my most popular Christmas crafts, DIY Snowman with Lights.  Make sure to check out that post for a step by step picture tutorial.

For this post, I made a video tutorial since sometimes that is the best way to see exactly how I do it.  There are also printable directions at the end of this post.

A few things before you get started:

• Since this post is part of a Dollar Store Christmas challenge, I tried to use almost all products from a dollar store.  Some I found at The Dollar Tree and others I found at the 99 Cent Store.
• I used two different size bowls from the Dollar Tree again.  They were in the glass candle section at my store.  The top one is slightly smaller.
• The green feather boa is also from the Dollar Tree.  If you’d like hair that sticks up and is a little nicer I would use a boa from a craft store like Joann’s.  I used one of the nicer ones for my DIY glitter ornaments and I prefer that look.

• The smaller hat was part of a headband from the 99 Cent Store.  I just cut where it was attached to the sides.
• I added fairy lights inside the glitter bowls as I did for the light-up snowman.  It was cute, but I’m not as much a fan of them in these Grinch decorations DIY.  The green glitter lights up as kind of a weird color and it’s easier to see some of the uneven glitter.  You should definitely try it both ways!  Just stick the lights in, turn them on and see if you like it.  If you do, keep it, if not, simply take them out.

• I really wanted a knit red and white striped scarf like the Grinch wears in the new movie, but I don’t know how to knit…  It’s on my list to learn!  I used a ribbon I had in my stash.  I folded it in half and glued it together to make it thinner.  Then I glued it on the glass and tied a knot in the front.

A little confession… this is my first hand drawn file.  It took me a while to figure out how to do it, and I was so excited when it actually worked!! 

If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can grab a black paint marker or Sharpie and draw it on.  I did that to an ornament I made and it came out pretty good.  Just look at a picture of the Grinch face while you’re doing it.

If you have a Cricut cutting machine, download the Cricut Grinch face file below, upload it to Cricut Design Space and cut it out with permanent vinyl. 

Sometimes the file will look blurry when you first open it, but once you download it, the SVG will open up clearly.

If it doesn’t automatically download, you might need to right-click on it and Save As. If you need additional help, make sure to check out my post on how to download and upload files to CDS.
